After adding 2 or 3 numbers the machine locks up and I get a "E" in the screen, left hand side.

5 Annoying, isn't it? I usually assume when that happens that I've keyed in the numbers too fast, or somehow didn't depress some key enough for the calculator to recognize it. Since I normally use the printing feature of this calculator, I go back to the last properly-entered calculation, and start over from that point. (If the error messages get too annoying, look for a good sale on a well-reviewed calculator that's a step or two up in quality -- this is the low-end model of Canon's printing calculator line, after all, and calculators tend to be on sale at this time of year (income tax time!), too.)
