how do you turn the burners on???!!!!!! I'm houses...

how do you turn the burners on???!!!!!! I'm housesitting and cannot get them to turn on. I've tried waving my fingers lightly over the "on/off" icons, touching them firmly, using a cloth over my fingers....tried everything. Help?!
