Just bought a new house that has these detectors installed in front hallway. I can't figure out how to remove the 9V battery. They have a swing-out door that carries the battery but it doesn't swing out far enough to remove the battery. Am afraid I'll break something if I force it.

5 The same problem led me here. I just called BRK First Alert support and when you swing out the door the 9V is disconnected from the unit. You only need to pry it down at that point. It works! But what a pain in the neck trying to figure that out. I too thought I would break the unit.

2 Many thanks! It works. Just to clarify for others, "pry it down" means to pull down on the rear end of the battery and it will slip out. To re-insert it, you need to look inside the drawer and find the + and - marks so you will orient the terminals correctly.
