The handle flops to engage the auger. There is no cable from handle to the box beow. The Auger assembler and belt and pins are intact. Seems something inside the box has broke or disconnected like a spring or such that allows the tension pulley to engage the belt. What should I check and can the bottom plate that wraps around the back come off without issue of replacing? Are there parts in the auger control pathway inside the box that typically fail?

5 Turns out the arm that holds the belt tension pulley was slightly bent as well as the roller that is on the auger control rod that pushes against the metal arm that has the tension pulley on it. Simply bent them to align but strange how they got out of wack.
