remote won't control apple tv - when i press the a...

remote won't control apple tv - when i press the apple tv MENU button, there is a small "flash".....and the button to the right of HELP briefly lights up. It was always working fine but now it won't control the apple tv. (I have the remote that came with the apple tv and it will control it properly)
