when starting a fire, smoke pours out of the bottom of stove no matter how we adjust the vent control

2 My Lopi Answer does the same thing. When I had it in the corner with the chimney going out and up it was a lot worse then where it is now with the chimney going strait up. When it was in the corner I would roll up a piece of news paper long enough so I could light it and stick the flame under the exhaust. This would get the air flow going and would help keep the smoke from entering the home.
