2 My dryer, a front-load maytag was making noise also and I thought the bearings were going also, but I took the front cover off to expose the drum and noticed that the metal around the front edge of the drum was fraying(wearing) yet causing it to rub metal against metal causing the noise until eventually the fraying caused my drum to stop turning completely. I had to file down the frayed metal around the edge of the drum which caused it to turn freely and it also eliminated the noise(make sure you realign and balance the drum while re assembeling). That sounds like what you may be experiencing but I can't be 100% sure. I'd have to see it.
