How do I remove the agitator from my maytag clothe...

How do I remove the agitator from my maytag clothes washer LAT2600AAE? It is very smelly, and my manual does not show how to remove it for cleaning, but when I lift the fabric softener cup, I see layers of grime and gunk caked inside the agitator.
