how do you shift gears in an Mitsubishi 2009 Lance...

how do you shift gears in an Mitsubishi 2009 Lancer 1.6 litre sedan? The shift lever features the regular P R D N like an automatic, and also have a + and - slot where I can shift manually; I want to know the rules and recommendations for doing this correctly? Can I shift back and forth between modes at will?
