My Robertshaw 9701i1 or 2? started playing a tune ...

My Robertshaw 9701i1 or 2? started playing a tune around 3am this morning and by the time I realized it was the thermostat and got up the back light went out and I found no indication of a problem. What in the world would make it play a tune like that? Thanks
