we have a robertshaw digital 9600 thermostat . When I changed the time it has a temperature of 1 degree differential. Now the furnace will start and then re-start again. Is the differential the cause?

5 The thermostat has nothing to compare to so it does not know its a degree off. Generally a " short cycle" is caused by dirty filter restricting the return air flow. Also make sure no moving air is directly hitting the thermostat as this will alter is reliability as well
