0 This is an old post so maybe someone else will find it helpful. The Singer Merritt 1862 has 3 straight stitch positions. Left, right and center. If your needle is set to either the left or right position you can not use zig zag as the opening in the faceplate does not allow for the needle to travel that far. You needle will also appear to tilt to the left if it is set to the left straight stitch position. The lever to adjust the needle back to the center position is on the front of your machine directly to the right of the lever that selects straight or zig zag stitches. Hope this helps. I also had the thread bunching problem after I had stitched some very heavy material. Bringing the upper thread tension back to 0 then back up to 3-4 (the setting for most material) fixed that problem. You may also want to check your bobbin tension. You should feel a bit of resistance when you pull on the thread with a bobbin installed in the bobbin holder. Hope this helps you or someone else. Cheers!

0 Sorry, almost forgot... you will also need to make sure that you have the correct disc installed. Lift the cover under the upper bobbin and make sure a disc is there - and that the disc installed is for straight stitching. The straight stitch disc is also used for all zig zag stitches.
