5 The pressure on the suction side of the gauge on an R-12 refrigerator should be at around 29- 30 PSI. Your ideal head pressure will vary depending on what kind of condenser set up the refrigerator has. For an air cooled condenser the head pressure should be around 90 PSI. Both of the pressures are dependent on the refrigerator below 40 degrees. A higher box temperature will result in higher pressures. First off to properly charge a refrigerator you also need to take a superheat reading, because it is very easy to over charge a refrigerator. (FYI if a refrigerator is under charged it will be warm and if a refrigerator is over charged it will be warm inside the refrigerator) Second, R-12 and all of it's many drop in replacements (like hotshot(which is 414-B) R409-A, R401-A, etc) are all regulated by the EPA, under the 608 refrigerant certification. If you don't have this certification it is illegal to buy any of these refrigerants. The cans of 134-A that some stores sell will not work in your appliance.
