5 In the tray. You are supposed to soak the filter first in clean water so it is soaked then place it in the tray. Place the tray in the humidifier and follow the instructions. p.s. You can get filters at Walmart that fit in this humidifier - but they're cheaper than the brand that comes with it. Around $7. They have instructions on the box. (Experience: I've owned and used this for 2 years).
