To use the VI Client to configure single-host licensing

3UnderSoftware,clickLicensedFeatures.
4ClickEdittotherightofLicenseSources.
TheLicenseSourcesdialogboxappears.
5ClicktheUseHostLicenseFilebutton.
6ClickBrowseandlocatethelicensefile.
Thisfilemustbelocatedon
theclientmachine,notontheESX Serverhost.License
filesmusthavea.lic extensionappearinthefilebrowser.
7ClickOKtosaveyourchanges.
Single-Host and Centralized Licensing in the Same
Environment
Usingsingle‐hostlicensesforESX Serverfeaturesandcentralizedlicensingfor
VirtualCenterfeaturesinthesameenvironmentispermitted.However,doingso
requireschangestothedefaultVirtualCenterconfigurationsettings.Ifyoudonot
changetheVirtualCentersettings,thesettingscanoverridesingle‐hostlicensefiles:
WhentheVirtualCenter Serverrestarts.
Whenthesingle‐hostESX Servermachinesareaddedtoinventoryagain.
Anysingle‐hostlicensefileontheESX Servermachineremainsunchangedbutignored.
To change VirtualCenter settings to allow single-host ESX Server licensing
1FromtheVI Client,chooseAdministration>ServerSettings.
2ClickLicenseServerinthelistontheleft.
3 DeselectthecheckboxforChangehostlicenseserversettingstomatch
VirtualCenter’ssettingwhentheyareaddedtoinventory.
CAUTIONIfyourestoreanESX Servermachinetosingle‐hostlicensingwithout
changingtheVirtualCenterdefaultconfiguration,theVirtualCenter Serversettings
mightoverridethesingle‐hostsettingsontheESX Servermachine.
